Raspberry Pi 3 Launched with 64-Bit CPU, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi at $35

The Raspberry Pi foundation has launched the third version of its popular low-power Raspberry Pi development platform, the Raspberry Pi 3. It's priced at $35, the same as the Raspberry Pi 2 mini computer unveiled last year, but adds a much request feature - integrated Wi-Fi as well as Bluetooth connectivity also comes with faster 64-bit quad-core Broadcom BCM2837 SoC with ARM Cortex-A53 CPU.

"The 900MHz 32-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 CPU complex has been replaced by a custom-hardened 1.2GHz 64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A53. Combining a 33% increase in clock speed with various architectural enhancements, this provides a 50-60% increase in performance in 32-bit mode versus Raspberry Pi 2, or roughly a factor of ten over the original Raspberry Pi," said Upton.

Raspberry Pi 3 will go on sale starting Monday from element14 and RS Components, and other resellers. The company also announced that at launch they will be using the same 32-bit Raspbian userland that have been used on other (previous generation) Raspberry Pi devices. The company will decide whether to move to the 64-bit mode over the next few months after investigating.

Facebook Rolling Out New Like Reactions

Facebook has rolled out "Reactions" - an extension of the "Like" button - worldwide on Wednesday, to allow users to express emotions such as sadness, anger and love. Reactions includes six emoticons depicting various responses such as love, laughter, happiness, smile, shock, sadness and anger. In order to add a reaction, you will have to hold down the Like button on mobile or hover over the Like button on desktop to see the reaction image options, then tap either Like, Love, Haha, Wow, Sad or Angry. In its News Feed algorithm, Facebook will count each reaction in the same way it counts likes.

Chris Cox, Chief product officer says, "Today we’re launching a pilot test of Reactions — a more expressive Like button. As you can see, it’s not a “dislike” button, though we hope it addresses the spirit of this request more broadly. We studied which comments and reactions are most commonly and universally expressed across Facebook, then worked to design an experience around them that was elegant and fun. Starting today Ireland and Spain can start loving, wow-ing, or expressing sympathy to posts on Facebook by hovering or long-pressing the Like button wherever they see it. We’ll use the feedback from this to improve the feature and hope to roll it out to everyone soon."

Sammi Krug, Product Manager, Facebook said in a company blog post, "We’ve been listening to people and know that there should be more ways to easily and quickly express how something you see in News Feed makes you feel. That’s why today we are launching Reactions, an extension of the Like button, to give you more ways to share your reaction to a post in a quick and easy way. We understand that this is a big change, and want to be thoughtful about rolling this out."

Ringing Bells to Face Action if it Fails to Deliver Freedom 251 Smartphone: Ravi Shankar Prasad

Ringing Bells, the company who had announced launching the world’s cheapest smartphone, is being monitored by the government. Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said that action will be taken against the company if they fail to deliver the Freedom 251 handset. He added, “Our Ministry enquired into how prepared they (Ringing Bells) are, whether they can provide a phone for Rs 251 or not. Whether they have the BIS certificate or not, we have spoken to them.”

He added that this was done to ensure that there are no discrepancies later. ”If there are any, we will take action as per the law. Our department is keeping a watch,” he said. A new entrant in the flourishing Indian mobile handset market, Ringing Bells last week unveiled what is being touted as the world’s cheapest smartphone. However, concerns have been raised by the industry on feasibility of a 3G smartphone at such a low price.

Ringing Bells has said the manufacturing cost of the phone is about Rs 2,500, which will be recovered through a series of measures like economies of scale, innovative marketing, reduction in duties and creating an e-commerce marketplace. The I-T Department is also looking into the financial structure of the company and has obtained documents, including those from the Registrar of Companies (RoC), in this regard.

A series of complaints were made to the Telecom Ministry against the company. Apart from BJP MP Kirit Somaiya, the Indian Cellular Association (representative of mobile handset manufacturers) had also approached the Ministry asking it to get into depth of the issue. They said the price of the device with the said specifications could not be below Rs 3,500 even after a subsidised sale.

There was also a controversy around the Noida-based firm showcasing a rival company Adcom’s handset as its own. Despite the controversies, Ringing Bells managed to received over 6 crore registrations in two days.

Ringing Bells Stops Taking Bookings for Freedom 251 Smartphone

Ringing Bells, the makers of the world's cheapest smartphone, on Saturday closed the booking for its 'Freedom 251' smartphone. Due to overwhelming response the booking got closed a day before. Earlier the company had announced the booking period from 18th to 21st February, 2016.

Announcing the closure of booking, the company said, "We are humble and extremely grateful for your overwhelming response and trust. Respectfully, this is to advise that the response far exceeds the number that we had expected and therefore, we are now closing the invitation to bookings in this phase 1."

The notice on the website read: "We appreciate and acknowledge that we may not have been able to meet the needs of all, but will definitely look forward to serving you again in the next phase."

According to the company, they received 37 million registrations on Day 1 (February 18) and 24.7 million on Day 2, which makes over 60 millions in total.

The previous post was regarding some facts about the smartphone which was encountered during the registration of the smartphone and here is what the company has said for some of the post that was listed

Coming to the Adcom branding seen on the smartphone, Ringing Bells President Ashok Chaddha clarified that it "wanted to show a sample or prototype of what the handsets will look like. This is not the final piece". "In view of the shortage of time and given that these were to serve only as prototypes to a limited list of persons, we went ahead. We would clearly mention that the final Freedom 251 manufactured/assembled in India would be to identical specs - i.e. no change," he added.

There were some issues with the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification too and the company says, Application is under filing and we expect to have the Certification in hand well before delivery commences.

Issuing a warning, BJP Member of Parliament Dr. Kirik Soumaiya, who is a Chartered Accountant and has a PhD in Financial Accounting, has issued a warning letter, and has requested the UP government to investigate the company, as the company and its claims look highly suspicious.

Current technology does not allow for a mobile phone to be manufactured at this cost. The bare minimum is around INR 3,800, even if it is subsidised. The company has made it clear that they have not received any subsidy, either from the government or any other third party for this project. Still the price is only Rs. 251.

So, the question still remains until and unless the smartphone gets delivered at the given time i.e. June 30th.

Buying Freedom 251, Here is What You Need To Know

When the news went viral for the smartphone with the price tag of Rs 251 only, everyone had geared up for booking the smartphone. Noida-based Ringing Bells had touted as the world’s cheapest smartphone. Freedom 251 has been trending on social media for the last two days.

This post is just to let the users know about Freedom 251 and does not pass any judgement about the phone and whether it’s scam or not. What we are referring to is that it seems more of a ‘Publicity Stunt’ and nothing else.

The registration for Freedom 251 smartphone started from www.freedom251.com on February 18th, 2016 from 6 AM. The website crashed in no time owing to the massive traffic it received. In fact the company stopped taking orders after few hours or so because the website had as many as “6 Lacs hits per second”, due to which firm noted that they are “taking a pause and upgrading the service and will revert within or before 24 hours.” Later in the day, Ringing Bells Director Mohit Goel said that 30,000 orders were booked before we terminated sales for Day 1. With a shipping charge of Rs 40, one unit of Freedom 251 cost Rs 291, so the company collected Rs 8,730,000 before the crash.

As the company had announced they will revert back after 24 hours, today the site was functional taking orders from the users. After resuming the service, however, hardly any issues have been resolved. The site is still inaccessible most of the time. Now, if you try and order from a desktop, it doesn't go through. No validations are in place in the submission form. This means you can enter imaginary states, pin codes, phone numbers, emailIDs and there will be no error while submitting. They have disabled the quantity field though. Till yesterday, you could put '0.5' and get the phone at half the price. Presumably half the phone.

Here are some facts about the smartphone which was encountered :

Let me start with the website, the domain was registered on 10 February 2016 and was updated on 14 February 2016. The website has only 4 tabs and most of the details are hardcoded. There seems to be no kind of return policy on the website, though it does say your Freedom 251 unit is covered by a one-year warranty.

The product came with Adcom branding, which was hidden by a whitener and overwritten with “Freedom 251”. And Adcom is denying that fact that it is selling or even manufacturing the phone for Ringing Bells.

The delivery date of the smartphone is on June 30th i.e. four months from today. Given the company's lack of any kind of a track record, there's an outside chance that it may never ship at all. The company had also launched a 4G smartphone dubbed the Smart 101, which is a cheap 4G Android device for just Rs. 2,999. The device went on order between February 2nd to 10th, and many users on the web are reporting that they never got any confirmation from the company, and moreover there was no response on the given customer care numbers.

Coming to the cost, Current technology does not allow for a mobile phone to be manufactured at this cost. The bare minimum is around INR 3,800, even if it is subsidised. The company has made it clear that they have not received any subsidy, either from the government or any other third party for this project. Still the price is only Rs. 251.

At the end of the website you can see "650+ Service Centre Pan India". There is no mention of even a single service centre, and nobody knows which cities they exist in.

Issuing a warning, BJP Member of Parliament Dr. Kirik Soumaiya, who is a Chartered Accountant and has a PhD in Financial Accounting, has issued a warning letter, and has requested the UP government to investigate the company, as the company and its claims look highly suspicious.

Even though the promoters claim that they will deliver the phone, it is highly improbable that they aill be able to do so, given the fact that no one would sell a phone for Rs. 251, that costs at least Rs. 3800 to build. As far as we can tell, this is either one of the biggest con jobs in India, or the promoters of Freedom 251 are certifiably insane.
