WhatsApp Rolling out "View Once" Feature for Photos and Videos

Facebook has confirmed the roll-out of the WhatsApp View Once photos and videos feature to everyone starting this week after beta testing is back in June. These disappear from the chat after they’ve been opened.

Here is the press release

"While taking photos or videos on our phones has become such a big part of our lives, not everything we share needs to become a permanent digital record. On many phones, simply taking a photo means it will take up space in your camera roll forever.

That’s why today we’re rolling out new View Once photos and videos that disappear from the chat after they’ve been opened, giving users, even more, control over their privacy.

For example, you might send a View Once a photo of some new clothes you’re trying on at a store, a quick reaction to a moment in time, or something sensitive like a Wi-Fi password.

As with all the personal messages you send on WhatsApp, View Once media is protected by end-to-end encryption so WhatsApp cannot see them. They will also be clearly marked with a new “one-time” icon.

After the media has been viewed, the message will appear as “opened” to avoid any confusion about what was happening in the chat at the time.

We’re rolling out the feature to everyone starting this week and are looking forward to feedback on this new way to send private and disappearing media."

WhatsApp Group Calling for Voice and Video Feature Rolled Out for Android, iOS Users

WhatsApp group voice and video calls are finally live. Back in May, WhatsApp said that it will roll out group calling feature in coming months. Today it has announced that it has started rolling out the group calls for voice and video for everyone starting today.

You can make a group call with up to four people total - anytime and anywhere. Just start a one-on-one voice or video call and tap the new "add participant" button in the top right corner to add more contacts to the call.

Group calls are always end-to-end encrypted, and we've designed calling to work reliably around the world in different network conditions. The feature is currently rolling out on the iPhone and Android versions of our app, it should be available for everyone over the next few days.
