Beware of Fake ‘DigiLocker’ Apps on Google Play Store

An year back, the government of India under the Digital India initiative had launched DigiLocker. DigiLocker which is basically an online locker facility, where users can upload and save all their government-issued documents such as PAN card, Aadhar Card, college certificates, property documents and the likes, online. Last week, the government also added the option on the DigiLocker app for users to upload their driving license and vehicle registration papers. The whole idea of the app is to help users avoid carrying their original certificates with them all the time.

However, recently, many fraudulent apps have been spotted on Google Play that pose to be the DigiLocker app issued by the government. In order to make it look authentic for their future victims; the criminals have used not just the Indian Prime Minister's photo but also used India's National Emblem. These fake apps might do anything from stealing your credentials or acting as Adware to even become a harbinger of Ransomware.

Here is how you spot fake DigiLocker apps

DigiLocker is only available for Android users at the moment, and has been downloaded close to 5 lakh times and the app size is 15MB.. The fake DigiLocker apps have been downloaded between 10,000 and 50,000 times, so a user needs to make sure they are downloading the genuine app. In order to be sure, check the developer name when downloading DigiLocker; the developer in this case is MeITY, Government of India. Any other developer name is basically a fake app.

Download Digilocker for Android.
