Google is Shutting Down Picasa, Asks Users to Move to Google Photos

Still using Picasa for sharing your photos, Now you will need to think before you do so. Google has decided to shut down its photo sharing service Picasa and focus entirely on Google Photos. The desktop application will not be supported starting from March 15, 2016 and Picasa Web Albums, a companion service will be shut down on May 1, 2016. The desktop application will still work, but it will not get any future updates.

“We believe we can create a much better experience by focusing on one service that provides more functionality and works across mobile and desktop, rather than divide our efforts across two different products. Google Photos is a new and smarter product, that offers a better platform for us to build amazing experiences and features for you in the future,” said Google.

However, for those of you who don’t want to use Google Photos or who still want to be able to view specific content, such as tags, captions or comments, we will be creating a new place for you to access your Picasa Web Albums data. That way, you will still be able to view, download, or delete your Picasa Web Albums, you just won’t be able to create, organize or edit albums (you would now do this in Google Photos).

Facebook Shuts Down Free Basics in India

Soon after Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) supported Net Neutrality and banned differential pricing, Facebook has pulled shut down Free Basics in India. Differential pricing means charging customers different prices for access to different websites and services.

“Free Basics is no longer available to people in India,” a Facebook spokesperson said in an emailed statement to TOI. Reliance Communications had partnered with Facebook for Free Basics (then Internet.Org) to provide the service in India, but it was suspended by the TRAI as it did not follow the principles of Net Neutrality.

Facebook had previously expressed it's disappointment with the regulation mandated by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, which dealt a huge setback to the social networking giant's efforts to promote it's Free Basics platform in India. Facebook says Free Basics is designed to connect the unconnected billions but critics say it creates a walled garden of only selected websites or apps, thus violating the concept of net neutrality.
