Li-Fi Technology 100 Times Faster Than Wi-Fi

Li-Fi, a super-fast alternative to Wi-Fi, has been proven capable of sending data at up to 1GBps in real-world tests.

So what exactly is LiFi? It used light to beam information via air. The technology was first discovered by Professor Harald Haas in 2011 of the University of Edinburgh.  “While LiFi may not completely replace WiFi, the technologies could be used in parallel to create more efficient networks,” IBTimes UK reported.

Li-Fi transmits data using LED lights, which flicker on and off within nanoseconds, imperceptible to the human eye. It was invented in 2011, and in the lab, has been able to reach a mindblowing 224 Gbps.

Li-Fi was tested this week by Estonian start-up Velmenni, in Tallinn. Velmenni used a li-fi-enabled light bulb to transmit data at speeds of 1Gbps. Laboratory tests have shown theoretical speeds of up to 224Gbps. It was tested in an office, to allow workers to access the internet and in an industrial space, where it provided a smart lighting solution.

“All we need to do is fit a small microchip to every potential illumination device and this would then combine two basic functionalities: illumination and wireless data transmission,” Haas told IBTimes UK. “In the future we will not only have 14 billion light bulbs, we may have 14 billion Li-Fis deployed worldwide for a cleaner, greener and even brighter future,” he added.

You can watch the full video of Haas talk about the Li-Fi technology in 2011 here

Nikon D5 Flagship Full-Frame DSLR Announced

Nikon just announced on its global page that it is indeed working on the successor to the D4S. The release states that the company is in the process of 'developing' the Nikon D5 which will be its new flagship FX-format DSLR. The timing of this news points to a possible announcement during CES 2106. Even though we don't have any detailed specifications or features about the Nikon D5, it's not too difficult to guess what we can expect from the new model. Nikon will most likely retire the ageing 16.2-megapixel sensor for a larger one in order to support 4K video. We can also expect support for more autofocus points, faster burst mode and perhaps a higher native ISO sensitivity.

The Nikon D5 will most likely retire the D4S, which was introduced last February in India as a refresh of the original D4. The current flagship features an improved Expeed 4 image processor over the older Expeed 3, a higher native ISO sensitivity of 25,600, 11fps burst mode, full-HD video recording at 60fps and a bigger price tag.

Speaking of the price, we expect the new camera to cost anywhere north of Rs. 4,00,000 (approximately $6,000) for the body only, considering the current D4S retails for around this price. We'll hopefully get more details next month as we inch closer to CES 2016.

Microsoft Releases First Major Update to Windows 10

Microsoft has rolled out their first major update for Windows 10 OS. It is dubbed as ‘November update’, build 10586, the latest update is now available for PCs and tablets. You can use your Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1 product key to activate Windows 10. Previously, you needed to install the older version first, then update to Windows 10 for free.

The update includes
  • Performance in everyday tasks, such as boot time now nearly 30% faster than Windows 7 on the same device.
  • With Cortana, you can use your device’s pen to just scribble a note in the Cortana Notebook and Cortana will recognize the phone number, email address, and even physical address to help you set reminders. Cortana can also now keep track of your event and movie bookings too, sending you helpful reminders to know where to go and get there on time, plus the option to book and track an Uber. We’re excited to make Cortana available in Japan, Australia, and Canada and India (in English) with features and experiences customized for each market.
  • Microsoft Edge offers improved performance and security, along with tab preview, which allows you to hover over your open tabs and get a preview of what’s on those websites without leaving the page you’re on. Microsoft Edge now syncs your Favorites and Reading list items across devices so you can easily get back to the content you’re interested in most. And, Cortana will now notify you of the best coupons from your favorite retailers such as Staples, Macys and Best Buy when shopping in Microsoft Edge.
  • The start menu has new changes, now you can stretch columns up to four tiles wide (Settings > Personalization > Start > Show more tiles), and the Start menu as a whole can contain more than 512 tiles—2048, to be exact. The context menus have also gotten a more consistent look (though they still aren’t consistent with the desktop’s just with each other).
  • The coloured title bars are back now. Go to Settings > Personalization > Colors and check the “Show color on Start, taskbar, action center, and title bar” option, your color customizations will show up on all your desktop windows, too.
  • Windows has a new “Find My Device” feature built in, which will track your laptop or tablet if it gets lost or stolen. Just head to Settings > Update & Security > Find My Device and click “Save my device’s location periodically” to enable it.
With this release, Microsoft thinks Windows 10 is finally ready for enterprise PCs, now being able to "confidently recommend Windows 10 deployment to whole organizations". Windows 10 is also on its way to Xbox One today, and we'll see its mobile version on select phones soon.

To download the update, Go to Settings > Update & Security and check for updates.

Paris Attacks: Facebook Sets Up Safety Check

Facebook launched a check-in feature to let people know that friends in Paris were safe after a series of bombings and shootings in the French capital killed at least 120 people on Friday.

The "Paris Terror Attacks" safety check let people signal whether they were out of harm's way, then notified all those they know at the leading social network.

"Quickly find and connect with friends in the area," a message at the Facebook Safety Check page read. "Mark them safe if you know they're OK."

The feature also allowed people to check which friends listed as being in Paris had not yet checked in as safe.

"We are shocked and saddened by the events unfolding in Paris," a Facebook spokesman told AFP.

"Communication is critical in these moments both for people there and for their friends and families anxious for news."

The death toll in the "unprecedented" series of attacks across Paris climbed through the night.

Police said around 100 people were killed at the Bataclan music venue in eastern Paris alone, where one witness said an attacker yelled "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest).

Sony Europe unveils a new Alpha-mount camera that belongs to the SLT range. The camera features Sony's 4D Focus system and is compatible with A-mount lenses. The a68 will go on sale in Europe starting March 2016 for roughly EUR 600 (approximately Rs. 42,800) for just the body and EUR 700 (approximately Rs. 50,000) with an 18-55mm, F3.5-5.6 SAM II kit lens.

"The new A68 (ILCA-68) camera from Sony lets enthusiastic photographers discover even more creative opportunities with their precious collection of A-mount lenses," said Sony in a press release. "Inheriting many pro-style features from the acclaimed A77II, the A68 features Sony's unique 4D FOCUS system that delivers extraordinary AF performance under any shooting conditions - even in lighting as low as EV-2 where other cameras struggle."

The a68 continues the use of Sony’s Translucent Mirror Technology that allows for constant AF tracking while the camera is shooting at 8 frames per second. The a68 features a 2.7-inch TFT LCD display with a resolution of 460k dots and can be tilted. You also get an electronic viewfinder, which is an Oled panel with a resolution of 1.4 million dots and offers 100 percent frame coverage. Sony touts the new A68 to come equipped with a fixed translucent mirror which allows the camera to perform quick shooting coupled with continuous use of accurate phase detection AF.

"The larger Exmor CMOS image sensor with approximately 24MP provides for high image resolution, delicate tonal gradation and expressive bokeh," said Sony. "And the BIONZ X featuring advanced image reproducing technologies processes vast data from the sensor at high speed for more realistic images." "The duo is a perfect match for shooting in the wide ISO range of 100-25600 and producing beautifully sharp, clear results," Sony added.
